“I learned of the Associate Team Leader (ATL) Program—the MWT leadership development program— and I knew this is where I needed to be and what I wanted to do. It sounded like a great opportunity because it combines strategy with hands on operations, which is the combination I was looking for.”

Zach, Pharmacy Warehouse Team Leader
I interned at H-E-B in the summer of 2015 and I was hooked on the company right off the bat. It was the culture and how much the company truly values people that really sold me. I studied Supply Chain Management at Texas A&M, so my corporate internship was in the Planning & Analysis department. It was great to see what happens behind the scenes and how decisions are made from an analyst perspective, but throughout my internship, my interest was really piqued by the Manufacturing, Warehouse, & Transportation (MWT) lines of business.
After my internship ended, I reached out to a few MWT Leaders and expressed my interest in their area of the business and my desire to learn more. Over Christmas break, they gave me a tour of some of the facilities and I learned of the Associate Team Leader (ATL) Program—their leadership development program— and I knew this is where I needed to be and what I wanted to do. It sounded like a great opportunity for me because it combined strategy with hands on operations, which is the combination I was looking for.
I started my full-time position in 2016 and it took me about 9 months to complete the ATL program. Since starting at H-E-B I’ve worked in our Perishables Distribution Center in San Antonio, followed by our San Marco General Merchandise warehouse—which is the largest warehouse we have—and now I am at the Pharmacy warehouse.
More than anything, H-E-B has a heart for people. I know it’s one of our leadership values, but it’s truly something we live each and every day. H-E-B’s values are very similar to how I grew up and what we are taught at Texas A&M, which made my transition from student to employee really easy. The company also loves its history and there’s a lot of tradition here, and who loves tradition more than Aggies, right!
One of the best parts of my job is getting to go back to campus and participate in recruiting events. I love engaging with the up and coming Aggies and telling them about all of the awesome opportunities waiting for them at H-E-B. It’s great to see their eyes light up at the possibilities.

Mark, Senior Civil Engineer
My dad spent his entire career working at H-E-B, so you could say it’s in my blood. I grew up seeing the culture firsthand and how good the company is to its employees. After graduating from Texas A&M with a Master’s in civil/structural engineering, I worked for a local structural engineering firm for 8 years before jumping at the opportunity to be part of the H-E-B team two years ago.
What drew me here was the people. They genuinely care about helping others, and you can see it. If someone doesn’t have the answer to your question, they will find you the person who does. Everyone is willing to help each other out. Nowhere was that more evident than during Hurricane Harvey, when everyone at the corporate level dropped what they were doing and went to work in the stores, bagging groceries, collecting carts, picking up trash--whatever needed to be done, they all pitched in and did it. That’s not something you see everywhere.
My primary role at H-E-B is site planning for new stores and major expansions, ensuring that whatever we are planning fits within the real estate boundaries that we have been provided. Some of our new stores have parking garage structures, and we have created a set of standards that allows customers to feel comfortable navigating and parking in a garage system not normally found in a grocery store setting.
As the only structural engineer on our team, I’ve had some amazing opportunities including designing structural drawings in-house, which is pretty innovative, and keeps us up to speed on codes and standards. I work closely with our Curbside team created a calculator that will help anyone quickly design a Curbside for future stores by simply entering data into a spreadsheet. It’s cool to be part of such a cutting edge area of H-E-B business.
One of my favorite things about working at H-E-B, besides the people, is the location. Our corporate headquarters are situated on the banks of the San Antonio River, and I like taking my lunch outside and enjoying the beauty of the River Walk and downtown San Antonio.
